GAP OF DUNLOE
The Gap of Dunloe is a glacial mountain pass with a selection of routes of various grades, lengths and styles. It’s a good place for those into trad climbing and there are abseil chains available in Bothán and Agent Orange or opportunities to take on intermediate climbs with top rope or lead rope.
Climbs are divided into crags located on the east and west sides of the Gap. If there’s a south-westerly wind, it’s better to climb on the west side. If there’s good sun, Bothán on the east side is a good bet. If there’s no wind, local climbers will tell you to avoid Caim or else be eaten alive by midges. Compared to other rock climbing locations, the Gap is convenient as there is plenty of parking nearby.
Pick a climb that matches your ability level and climbing style because every option has amazing views.

A climb with a view
Crags here are red sandstone shaped by a glacier into a U-shaped pass flanked by MacGillycuddy's Reeks. There's a reason the Gap is one of the most photographed places in Ireland.
Where to start
The west side of the Gap has the most climbs, with Brennan’s Leap being the first port of call for most new climbers to the area.
Logging new ascents
New climbs can be logged in a book at Kate Kearney's or on the routes database www.climbing.ie.
Relax after your climb
Kate Kearney's Cottage is a pub and restaurant at the foot of the Gap that has been welcoming visitors for more than 150 years.
