CURRA HILL WALK

This walk offers scenic views of ocean, forest and mountain landscapes, as well as a Fairy Forest and a summit cairn. You begin among tall pine trees that really do look like something out of a fairytale when the light is just so. Local artists build small fairy houses among the trees to entertain kids.

As you leave the fairy forest to follow the path above the beach, glimpses of the ocean appear between the tree trunks. The waves look impressively long from this vantage as they stretch across Castlemaine Harbour.

When the walking route circles around to the other side of Curra Hill, the view changes completely to green fields and mountains dotted with sheep. You can even look into Coomasaharn Horseshoe from here. Then the path crests the hill and the ocean comes into view once again. The summit is marked by a cairn. Although the walk isn’t too taxing, you really do feel quite high up looking down at Rossbeigh Strand and Dooks. In the summer, you might run into paragliders launching from here.

Fairy Forest

Local artists build fairy houses and decorate the forest at the foot of the hill to create an enchanting walkthrough that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Old rail line

Some of the walk follows the route of a railway line that ran to Valentia Island until the 1960s and was the most westerly line in Europe.

Cairn with a view

A cairn marks the summit, standing above views over Rossbeigh Strand and Castlemaine Harbour to Dingle and the Atlantic.

Kerry Way

The route covers part of the spectacular long-distance Kerry Way hiking trail.

FAQ

Can I use public transportation to get there?

From Killorglin, take the 279A bus to Glenbeigh and walk from the village.

What should I bring on the trip?

A water bottle and a snack. Wear hiking boots because you don’t want to ruin your good runners with sheep poop. Bring swim togs and a towel in case you’re tempted to go for a swim in Rossbeigh after your hike.

Is it family friendly?

Yes. Even kids who are too young to do the entire hike can still enjoy the Fairy Forest at the start.
