CASTLEMAINE HARBOUR

See the Wild Atlantic Way from the Wild Atlantic as you pass hidden coves and steep cliffs while seabirds fly overhead. This is an adventure for expert kayakers who are confident in their skill levels.

The last leg of this journey involves taking on choppy water where two tidal rivers pour into the sea and the surge becomes bottlenecked between the strands of Inch and Rossbeigh. It is important to be aware of the tide times and to plan carefully if attempting this trip.

Our suggested route here is from Kells to Cromane as it has so much to offer; the southern side of the bay is more user-friendly as it’s more protected and there are many small caves, inlets and arches to explore. Keep an eye out for wildlife too: sanderlings, oystercatchers and red-throated divers can often be seen, while an inquisitive seal may also raise its head to say hello as you paddle past.

Freedom to explore

Kayaking the coast allows you to get into hidden nooks and crannies, coves and beaches that are inaccessible by road.

Twin sandbars

The recommended route from Kells to Cromane takes kayakers between the great sandbars of Rossbeigh and Inch.

Recommended route

Start at Kells and head toward Cromane. It is crucial to only attempt to pass between Rossbeigh and Inch at high tide, so know the tide times in advance.

Cromane shellfish

Refuel at the end of a trip at Jack's Coatguard, home to some of Ireland's best seafood, including sought after Cromane mussels and oysters.
