SKELLIG RING

This short driving route can be done on its own or as a detour from the Ring of Kerry that takes you off the tourist track and into wilder territory.

Part of the Wild Atlantic Way, the route connects Waterville, Ballinskelligs, Portmagee and Valentia Island. The communities here are the westernmost in both Ireland and Europe and are so remote that the Irish language survived here after colonisation and is still spoken today by the people of the Gaeltacht.

The roads are quiet. The scenery is raw: rural farmlands, rocky outcrops, remote beaches, sheer cliffs and islands.

Waterville is home to a statue of entertainer Charlie Chaplin who was said to enjoy holidaying in this small coastal village.

Cahersiveen

Cahersiveen is one of Europe's westernmost towns and is home to ancient stone forts and a pretty harbour with lighthouse views.

Ballinskelligs

Shrouded in myth and mystery, Ballinskelligs is home to a 16th century castle, an Augustinian abbey and a beach, as well as a renowned chocolate factory.

Star Wars

Remote and ancient Skellig Michael is a World Heritage Site that was used as a setting for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.
