COOMLOUGHRA HORSESHOE

Ireland’s ultimate trek takes you to the top of the country’s three highest peaks – Carrauntoohil, Beenkeragh and Caher – in a single day and features challenging hiking alongside scrambling across a selection of knife-edge rocky ridges.

Unlike many other routes to the summit of Carrauntoohil, this starts at the Hydro Car Park from where hikers trek into the Coomloughra valley and past loughs Eighter, Coomloughra and Eagher (that supply much of the region with fresh water) before starting the ascent.

You’ll need your best scrambling skills to reach the summit of Beenkeragh, and to have a head for heights before taking on the narrow ridge that then leads onto Carrauntoohil. Don’t be fooled by Caher being just the third highest mountain; it offers quite the challenge before you head back down into the valley.

Beenkeragh Ridge

This rocky arete between Beenkeragh and Carrauntoohil is not for the faint-hearted thanks to its narrow path with loose rock and steep drops on either side.

Three more peaks

As well as the three biggies, Horseshoe trekkers have to climb Skregmore (848m), The Bones (956m) and Caher West Top (973m)

Caher Ridge

Connecting Caher and Caher West Top is yet another ridge, which is highly exposed to the wind.

Wildlife

Keep an eye out for eagles, buzzards and ravens as you climb.
