Lough Cumeenoughter

* Freedom to roam

LOUGH CUMEENOUGHTER

Ireland's highest lake sits at the foot of Brother O'Sheas Gully, one of the main routes to the summit of Carrauntoohil.

Highest lake

Set between two peaks at 707m and with incredible valley views, Lough Cummeenoughter is the highest lake in Ireland.

Wild swimming

Many hikers on the way to Carrauntoohil simply can't resist getting bragging rights by taking a dip in the lake, although you should exercise caution if you're considering doing this. It gets really cold that high up.

Picnic Spot

Hikers can stop for a rest in the natural amphitheatre that surrounds the lake before making their way to Carrauntoohil's summit.

Twin peaks

Cummeenoughter is set between Ireland's two highest mountains, famed Carrauntoohil and Beenkeragh.
