Glencar Cattle Show
Enjoy a wonderful summer’s day out at the annual Glencar Cattle Show held on the last Sunday in June. The family fun starts at 1.30 pm at the Lickeen Sports Field in Glencar.
The event, founded in 1940, was originally established to showcase the Kerry Cattle breed which is Kerry’s native breed. Although possibly one of the oldest in Europe, it is now a rare breed.
The event kicks off with a children’s fancy dress competition and, throughout the afternoon, there are various competitions for cattle, sheep, ponies and dogs. While the animal classes are being judged, there are children’s running competitions from age 6 upwards, penalty shoot and sheaf throwing, and Irish dancing competitions, to name but a few. There’s plenty to take part in and plenty to watch!
Other entertainment includes a farm animal petting experience and children’s amusements. And if all that action and fresh air builds up an appetite, no worries: there are plenty of refreshments available.
The grand finale is the sheep dog trials. A true test of the bond between owner and working dog, this is always of great interest to locals and visitors alike.
Experience a traditional agricultural show and sports day at the Glencar Cattle Show and take home some memories of a great day out.
