HAG'S TOOTH RIDGE

Take one of the toughest routes to the top of both Carrauntoohil and Ireland’s second-highest mountain Beenkeragh on this route that takes in two brilliant ridge walks.

This is a highly physical trek on severe terrain that will require you to traverse sections of loose rock and boulders. Starting in Cronin’s Yard, the route departs Hag’s Glen, passing the Hag’s Tooth, a prominent feature of the Reeks before taking on the dizzying Hag’s Tooth Ridge in a Grade 2 scramble to the summit of Beenkeragh. From here you could return the way you came, but it’s far more enjoyable to press on over the narrow Beenkeragh Ridge and onto the summit of Carrauntoohil, for a selfie by the summit cross, before descending the Devil’s Ladder and back on the start.

Hag's Tooth

One of the most recogniseable features of a hike in the Macgillycuddy Reeks is this pointed rocky spur at 650m.

Twin peaks

If you're up for a challenge, this is the best way to see the number one and two peaks of the Reeks in an exciting day out.

What's in a name?

The Irish name for Hag's Tooth is Stumpa an tSaimh (Stump of the Sorrel) but it is also known as Stumpeenadaff ('Little Pinnacle of the Ox).

Beenkeragh Ridge

This short, narrow exposed ridge connects Ireland's two highest mountains with some dizzying scrambling needed to complete the journey.
