Walking

LOUGH ACOOSE TO BRIDIA

Walk from Lough Acoose through Derrynafeana Glen following the Lack Road up through a mountain pass and into the remote Bridia Valley. The Lack Road has been used for 5000 years.

From the top of the ridge, you can look back at Lough Acoose with the Dingle Peninsula on the horizon and the crown-shaped ridge of Caher and the Reeks to the east.

Ahead of you, the Bridia Valley extends from the hump of Broaghnabinnia Mountain following the course of the River Caragh. You won’t have phone reception, so bring a map.

Lough Acoose

Lough Acoose is a freshwater fishing lake full of arctic char, salmon, brown trout and an endangered species of eel.

Ancient cooking pits

One piece of archaeological evidence that points to the area being an ancient settlement site is the presence of fulachtai fiadh, Bronze Age cooking pits.

Ancient field systems

Derrynafeana was settled in the Broze Age and signs of ancient field systems can still be seen in the landscape.

The Lack Road

The Lack Road over the mountain pass was already in use 5000 years ago.
