Walk from the Climbers Inn through an ancient field system to the banks of Lough Acoose and back. From Climber’s Inn, follow the road north-east for about 1 km before turning onto a path at a sign that says Walking Route to Bridia Valley Cross Country.

The rest of the way is marked by posts with a little yellow hiker icon. You will pass through 19th-century ruins, a stark reminder of the fact that Ireland is the only country in Europe to have a lower population density now than in the 1800s as a consequence of the Great Famine. The area surrounding Lough Acoose is bogland that has preserved signs of a Bronze Age settlement, including ancient field systems and cooking pits.

Bog conservation is a hot topic in environmentalism because of bogland’s ability to absorb carbon and because this kind of ecosystem hosts a lot of biodiversity, including many rare species of plants, animals and insects.
