RING OF THE REEKS

Starting and ending in Killorglin, this 90km circular journey takes on three incredible, lung-busting climbs: the Ballaghbeama Gap, Moll’s Gap and The Gap of Dunloe and has you cycling under the gaze of Ireland’s three highest mountains: Carrauntoohil, Beenkeragh and Caher.

The route takes on some of Ireland’s most breathtaking scenery: craggy peaks, still glacial lakes and fields with yellow gorse – and the feeling is one of being in pristine wilderness with just the occasional cyclist, walker or horse-drawn cart for company. Other than that, it’s you and the wildlife for much of the ride.

The remoteness doesn’t mean there aren’t places to enjoy a mid-ride coffee and cake though! Refuelling stops can be found in the Black Valley and bustling Kate Kearney’s Cottage.

Highest passes

The Ballaghbeama Gap, Moll’s Gap and The Gap of Dunloe are three of Ireland's highest mountain passes – all on one cycle route.

Lung-busting elevation

Some 90km in length, the total elevation gain of the route is more than 1,500m, with the highest point being Moll's Gap at 260m.

Formed by glaciers

It's thought that these passes were formed when glaciers broke out from the Black Valley some 25,000 years ago during Ireland's last ice age.

Coffee stops

Despite some of the routes being super remote, there are a few places to refresh and refuel along the route.
