CARAGH LAKE
Carved in the last Ice Age by glaciers, the vast expanse of Caragh Lake offers a (mainly) sedate paddle, perfect for exploring its many hidden coves or stopping at Carrig House or Ard na Sidhe for afternoon tea. This is serene kayaking at its best.
On most days the water is glacial and a great place from which to see the surrounding rugged mountains and unspoilt pastures.
If the wind is above 3 on the Beaufort Scale, consider somewhere else. Our route here suggests an 8 km traverse of the lake from end to end, but the setting is equally beautiful if you just enter the water and paddle around for a while.
THE RIDE
- Duration: 3 hours
- Length: 8km
- Route Type: Point to point
- Category: Scenic
Quiet and still
Aside from the occasional bird call and the splash of your paddle, there's little that breaks the lake's silence. Don't kayak here if there's a wind warning.
Public access
There are many spots to access the water but the easiest and safest is at the public access point on the north shore.
Lakeside retreats
Two high-end hotels, Carrig Country House and Ard Na Sidhe, overlook the lake and offer fine dining.
Wildlife spotting
Take a close look at the shore as you paddle along, you may be able to spot wild goats, cormorants and even the odd white-tailed eagle.
FAQ
This 5km long stretch of soft sand and wild dunes is ideal for summer and winter walks, as well as being a long-standing favourite for swimmers and surfers
