LICKEEN WOOD (CASTLEROCK) LOOP
This is a family-friendly walk through Glencar with mixed forestry including many native species. Lickeen is a Special Area of Conservation and hosts wildlife and feral goats.
From the top of Castlerock, you can see Caragh Lake and the far hills over the treetops.
If you bring a packed lunch, there are picnic benches near the parking area and also further up the road just where Blackstones Bridge crosses the river, which is a pleasant spot for a break.

Native forestry
Lickeen is full of trees native to Ireland such as oak, ash, holly and alder.
Lime kilns
You'll pass the ruins of an old lime kiln along the road. These kilns would have been a common feature in rural Ireland in the 18th century.
Lake activities
Nearby Caragh Lake is a popular place for swimming, kayaking and SUPing.
Glencar Cattle Show
This walk brings you by the pitch where the Glencar Cattle Show is held every year in June.

There is a nice picnic spot here.
Take N70 South from Killorglin. When you pass the Red Fox Inn, turn left at the sign for Caragh Lake. Take a right at the sign for the Glencar Hotel and continue on this road keeping Caragh Lake on your left side.
If you’re tempted to stop for photos along the way, there are laybys to pull over. When the lake is no longer in view and you find yourself in the forest, look out on the right for the sign for Lickeen Recreational Area.
