Winter is a wonderful season to really slow down and find yourself again after a busy summer. This is only a taste of some of the great things to do this winter in the majestic Reeks District.
1. Hike up Strickeen – MacGillycuddy Reeks
Winter days can be crisp and fresh, so a brisk hike up Strickeen is the perfect way to get the blood flowing on a sunny winters day. Strickeen, part of the Eastern McGillycuddy Reeks, is ideal for a short trek, while still offering majestic views. Pass Kate Kearneys Cottage and head up the Gap of Dunloe, the sign for Strickeen is on your right. Follow the zig-zag route up and be rewarded with stunning views of the Lakes of Killarney, Beaufort, Killorglin and the Atlantic Ocean. The trip takes around 3 hours up and down.
2. Warming Lunch
After all that fresh air and exercise, it’s time for a hearty, warming lunch. With many dining options in the Reeks District, the choices are plentiful. In Killorglin town, both the Bianconi and Bunkers are great lunch spots – enjoy a selection of salads, sandwiches, hot dishes, roast of the day and homemade soups in a warm, cosy ambience.
3. Winter Woollies
Then it’s time for some retail therapy – and what could be better, than stocking up on some handmade cosy woollens, at the Kerry Woollen Mills. Established over 300 years ago in Listry, it is one of the last surviving traditional woollen mills still manufacturing in the beautiful Kerry countryside. From the outlet shop, you can see parts of the Mill in operation. Explore the extensive range of Jumpers, shawls, hats, scarves and blankets – perfect to keep the chill at bay this winter.
4. Walk on the Beach
To work off your lunch calories, take some time for a brisk walk on either Rossbeigh Beach or Inch Beach – both of which are Blue flag beaches. Enjoy a majestic walk with beautiful views, followed by a warming, decadent Irish coffee. There are many fantastic “Irish coffee” spots to choose from in both areas – for some ideas check out the food and drinks section on our website.
5. Soothing Massages
Ease away any aches and tension with a soothing, healing Lomi-Lomi massage at Aloha House. Let Louise and her team work their magic in the spectacular setting overlooking the River Laune in Killorglin.
Enjoy your perfect winter’s day in the Reeks District where the possibilities are endless….
